Professional hygiene maintenance is of most importance irregardless of how well your home care is. The human body naturally mineralizes plaque remaining on the teeth or hiding under the gums, thus causing tartar / calculus to form. This calculus is a crystallized block of placque and bacteria that attaches to the roots and thus causes food and debris to become further lodged underneath. This causes the condition known as gingivitis where the gums become locally infected, swell, and often will bleed when flossing and brushing. The Hygienist evaluates the health of the gums by preforming a periodontal examination with probing seen below:
Left untreated, gingivitis can progress into the bone causing a usually painless condition called periodontitis. Periodontitis leads to the destruction of the bone that supports your teeth, thus causing tooth loss. Approximately 50% of the human population is genetically prone to this silent disease and without routine preventative dental care and hygiene maintenance to remove the deposits of calculus and tatar, damage to the gums and teeth will occur.
