Myofascial Pain / Discomfort
Facial soreness, pain, and fatigue when chewing are often symptoms of unconscious grinding / clenching at night when sleeping. This may cause neck and upper back pain which can then lead to tension headaches and potentially be a trigger for migraines.
Para-functional habits are behaviors that occur while we are awake. These habits include daytime clenching, nail biting, cheek and lip biting, and chewing on foreign objects.
Fabrication of Bite Guard
A Bite Guard is a highly customized appliance fabricated on either the upper teeth, or the lower. It acts as hard, flat, protective layer of clear material that allows for the equal distribution of biting force to be applied around the whole mouth evenly while simultaneously allowing for muscular “release” during the act of nocturnal grinding. This allows for the facial muscles to naturally relax as patients can not bite / grind as hard. The biting surface of the teeth are also directly protected from the wear that will eventually occur due to persistent nocturnal bruxism.
